This hamlet is the nearest to Scala Centro, and is built around its small church. Its claim to fame is as the birthplace of Blesséd Gerard (Fra Gerardo Sasso), the founder of the Sovereign Military Order of the Knights of Malta. There is very little left of the Sasso dwelling, but the works of its eminent occupant are well anchored in the memory and culture of Scala.
The high apses of San Pietro are supported by sturdy buttresses. In the background, surrounded by chestnut groves, the hamlet of Santa Caterina.
The tiny square in San Pietro is very hospitable and on warm summer afternoons under the shade of the pepper tree and chat to the locals.
A short guide to the
ancient town of Scala.
